In our classes, we work on the speech Emma Watson gave at the UN, where she spoke about women’s rights. This speech is about gender equality, but also about leadership.
Emma Watson is known as an actress for her role in Harry Potter as Hermione and she has lived many fantastic adventures in movies.
Not everyone knows she is an activist, a humanitarian, and a graduate of Ivy League college.
In September 2014, Emma Watson launched the HeForShe campaign, calling all men to action to help fight gender inequality. In her speech at the UN, she invites not only women but also men to take a step toward equal rights and opportunities.
She shares a message where men are involved on behalf of women to create a united force for gender equality. Watson emphasizes that both men and women need to be advocates for change and that the HeForShe movement is about freedom and breaking gender stereotypes, so that men and women can be free to be both sensitive and strong.
At Veritas, we discuss the topic of gender equality related to the speech to deepen critical thinking and to reflect on and explore different points of view.
But we also focus on Emma Watson’s speech because she took the lead to step up and share her ideas and to talk about an important message in front of the UN, such an intimidating place to share her thoughts in front of many important people.
She was initially nervous, voice trembling slightly, but after some time, the strength of her idea showed up. She looked up confidently with strength in her voice and she appealed to our emotions because she believed in her message of equality for both men and women.
We can be inspired by her leadership and decide in the same way we can take the leadership to inspire others.
We would like to inspire others with the strength and clarity of our ideas and our strong belief in them.
