Forget the Goal — Build the System: What Atomic Habits Teaches Us About Mastering Business English |コーチブログ |ベリタス (VERITAS)

Recently I’ve rediscovered one of the most popular books on self-improvement out there: ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear. From the first pages I started having so many ‘aha moments’ which were immediately connecting in my mind with how we learn new skills and specifically how we can become master communicators.

“Ultimately, it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.”

Just like a plane, we also need directions to guide us through a life-long learning journey, however having a goal is not enough because while goals set directions, systems make the progress. When we spend too much time thinking about our goals and not enough time designing our systems multiple problems arise:

Problem #1: Think about this – both winners and losers have the same goal. Every athlete wants to win a gold medal. Every candidate wants to get the job. Every business persons wants to successfully close the deal. The goal is always there. However those who implement a system of continuous small improvements can achieve the desired outcome.

Problem #2: Achieving a goal is only a momentary change. In the book the author gives a simple example of a messy room: if you find energy and time to tidy up, then you will have a clean room – for now. But if the habit doesn’t change the room once again will be messy. So you are left chasing the same outcome because you never changed the system behind it. You need to fix the inputs and the outputs will fix themselves.

If changing your learning habits feels difficult, remember—the issue isn’t you, it’s the system you’re using. Bad habits stick not because you lack motivation, but because your approach to change needs a better structure.

In our coaching program, we guide you through a communication system that builds:

  • Confidence speaking up in meetings
  • Clear structure in presentations
  • Concise, persuasive messaging
  • The ability to influence, negotiate, and lead across cultures

And like habit building, mastery happens step by step, interaction by interaction, habit by habit.
