A positive attitude isn’t just about feeling good—it shapes how you handle challenges, build relationships, and achieve your goals. Shifting from a negative to a positive mindset doesn’t mean ignoring reality; it means focusing on solutions instead of problems. Research shows that positive thinking boosts mental and physical health, reduces stress, and enhances decision-making.
One of the easiest ways to shift your mindset is through gratitude. Writing down three things you’re grateful for each day helps train your brain to focus on the positives. Your mindset also affects your communication—approaching conversations with optimism fosters openness, patience, and stronger relationships.
How Veritas Incorporates the Power of a Positive Attitude
At Veritas, we believe that a positive mindset is key to helping our fellows achieve their goals. We actively incorporate the power of a positive attitude into our program to keep fellows motivated and on track:
Reflecting on Achievements and Long-Term Goals:
We regularly ask our fellows to reflect positively on their accomplishments and future career aspirations. This helps them see the progress they’ve made, while maintaining a focus on their broader objectives.
Focusing on Present Efforts:
Before discussing future plans, we focus on what our fellows can do right now to keep moving forward. This encourages a sense of agency and positive thinking about ongoing development.
Weekly Report (WR) Posts:
Every week, fellows post a WR to review their past week, celebrating successes and planning for the week ahead. This helps them stay positive and set clear goals for continued progress.
Positive Feedback in Coaching:
When providing feedback, we always start with positive observations, followed by areas for improvement. This approach encourages confidence and keeps the overall tone constructive.
What Keeps Me Positive as a Coach
As a coach, I know that the energy I bring to each session directly impacts my fellows. I firmly believe that unless coaches maintain a positive attitude, our fellows won’t be able to do the same. Here’s what I do to stay positive and continue inspiring others:
Reflecting on Daily Achievements:
Before leaving the office, I take a moment to think about the day’s accomplishments, big or small. This keeps me grounded and helps me appreciate the progress made each day.
Starting the Day with Excitement:
Each morning, I open a notebook and jot down the exciting parts of my role for the day. This sets a positive tone and helps me approach each task with enthusiasm.
Staying Connected with Fellow Coaches:
We all have our ups and downs. Sharing experiences and exchanging ideas with my fellow coaches keeps me motivated. The support system we have helps us stay positive, collaborate, and keep improving together.
Focusing on the Bigger Picture:
On challenging days, I remind myself of the bigger purpose behind what I do. Knowing that I’m helping fellows achieve their goals and develop into future leaders gives me a sense of fulfilment. It’s this broader perspective that keeps me going when things get tough.
Shifting your mindset takes practice, but it leads to resilience, motivation, and success. At Veritas, we believe a positive attitude fuels both personal and professional growth. The next time you face a challenge, shift your focus—acknowledge progress, find opportunities, and move forward with confidence.
